New Leader Training

"Every Youth Deserves a Trained Leader" -
Lord Baden-Powell

The new Basic Leader Training program is the culmination of more than two years of work by professionals and volunteers from throughout the nation. Their goal was to revise and update the volunteer leader training materials for the Boy Scouts of America. The result is a seamless training program that helps leaders easily graduate through the courses quickly and with little duplication.

The package provides the district training committee with tools to achieve 100 percent trained unit volunteers. It begins with the existing Fast Start training, continues through This is Scouting , and is followed by Leader Specific training for each adult's role in the unit.

Here is a brief overview of the components of the training continuum.

Fast Start Training

Fast Start training is the first step for any new volunteer and is to be delivered immediately after a new leader registers and before he or she meets with any youth member.  Fast Start training remains essentially unchanged. It continues to provide an immediate comfort level for new leaders and enables them to say, "I can do this!"

Cub Scout Leader Fast Start

Cub Scout Leader Fast Start (No.AV-01V022) is a package of position-specific video programs accompanied by a Cub Scout Leader Fast Start Viewer Guide (No. AV-01G022). Each program gives leaders information on planning and conducting their first meeting, and even demonstrates one they can use.

Pack-administered self-study is the primary method of delivery for Fast Start training. A pack trainer usually supports the new leader during this training period.

Boy Scout Fast Start

Boy Scout Fast Start Viewer Guide, No. AV-O2BVG. Also available is the Boy Scout Fast' Start video, No. AV-025. The Boy Scout Fast Start video, revised in 1990, includes the following segments:

"The Troop Meeting." This is the primer on how to run a troop meeting. Produced for new unit leaders and commissioners, the video covers planning, parts of the meeting, the patrol method, and resources.

"The Outdoor Program." Running a troop meeting is one thing; running a successful outdoor activity is another. This program goes into planning, organization, ideals, and BSA policy for outdoor activities. It also touches on long-term and high-adventure activities.

"The Troop Organization." This program starts with the charter concept-the chartered organization, the district, and the council, and their relationship to the troop. Each leadership and committee position is described. This is an excellent program for commissioners, troop committees, troop leaders, and chartered organizations.

Venturing Fast Start

The Venturing Fast Start guide illustrates how using the program planning process can get Venturing programs off to a successful start. It provides information about training youth officers and is designed to be produced locally to orient new crew Advisors. Also available is the New Crew Fast Start video, No. AV-03V013, which was produced to support the booklet. Venturing Fast Start guide, No.25-818 New Craw Fast Start video, No. AV-03V013

This is Scouting (for all unit-level leaders)

"This is Scouting" was added to the BSA's on-line Learning Center and replaces New Leader Essentials as a required course for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing volunteers to earn the "Trained" leader emblem. Councils should eliminate New Leader Essentials from all training calendars and add a link to http://MyScouting.org.

Leader Specific Training

Once a volunteer has a solid overview of the BSA's valued-based program, he or she can begin training for a specific Scouting position through Leader Specific training. This training provides the specialized knowledge a new leader needs to assume a leadership role. Because each course is designed for a specific leadership position, the training time varies. Leader Specific training has been developed for the following positions and their assistants:

    • Tiger Cub Den Leader

    • Cub Scout Den Leaders

    • Cubmasters

    • Pack Committee Members

    • Scoutmasters

    • Troop Committee Members

    • Venturing Committee Members

    • Venturing Advisors
